Black is the New Pink. Still.

Ombre Leggings

I know, again with the black and white. I can't help it. Someone at work today told me that I seem "more like a pink person" when I explained that I would exclusively wear black to the office everyday if I didn't think I might get labeled "that goth looking first-year." I almost threw up. I mean, I'll wear pink sometimes, but I picture a really tacky Barbie driving that bubble gum pink convertible when someone is described as a "pink kind of person".

In order to cleanse myself of that blasphemous comment, I obviously had to choose one of my "shades of black" ensembles. It doesn't hurt that this also incorporates one of my recent obsessions...ombre. These pants are by Rag and Bone (and I got them at Nordstrom, like I did 75% of my current wearable wardrobe) and they are incredibly soft. They're somewhere between a jean and a legging, but they don't have that obvious "jegging" look to them, which is refreshing.

In general, I like the versatility that each of these pieces offers. The Rebecca Minkoff bag is a must (as you know) and a black and silver Marc Jacobs watch won't ever go out of style--not to mention you can wear it almost anywhere (maybe not to all those award shows you're invited to, but you know). I own the MM6 boots and I wear them ALL the time. They were expensive (I bought them on sale...), but I wear them on the weekends with outfits like this, or to work with a skirt/dress and tights. Or for my favorite day of the week...CASUAL FRIDAY. I think what I'm really trying to say is that I like the versatility of neutrals...? Shocking, I know.

RETURN OF THE WORKING BITCH

Work/Python
LADIES, ladies. I introduce to you maybe my favorite work look ever. Now, I know it probably doesn't scream at you or jump off the page at first glance. But that's okay. I like to think of myself as a subtly fashionable person and this ensemble is definitely in line with my philosophy.

Despite previous posts about incorporating color into a modern girl's work wardrobe, neutrals are my jam. My favorite color? Black. My second favorite color? Gray. After that, nude/blush and white (I'm pale, so I try not to do tooooo much white). I won't continue any further, as I'm sure you get the picture here.

This Equipment top (available at Nordstrom- my favorite place- and Piperlime) is insane. On top of being both neutral (the body of the shirt is a very light blush color), it has a trendy touch of python print and it's incredibly soft, light and comfortable. If you're anything like me and you sit in an office all day, you want this look for two reasons: comfort and hotness. Like, hello, if you can look super cute AND be comfortable, why would you wear anything else?

In addition, I HIGHLY recommend learning how to rock the power bun. When you just don't feel like washing and drying that crazy mane of yours (or you just feel extra bitch-tastic), this is the solution you've been looking for. Yes, I know the sock bun thing has been around for a while, but you need to start taking it seriously. I haven't seen anyone look heinous in a power bun yet (unless they let it fall out all over the place), it's easy and it makes you look sexy without exposing any cleavage. Add some studded shoes-smoking loafers are also a great comfort choice- and you're borderline guaranteed to be "the cute girl" in the office.

OBSESSION AS OF LATELY: Ombre & Chambray

Denim/Chambray
Annnnnnd it's basically March. When did that happen? After spending a little time in NYC and Chicago, I have a new appreciation for you people that spend an entire winter actually having to wear winter clothes and deal with snow all whilst keeping track of two mittens and a pair of earmuffs. After what I would describe as a hiatus from life as I knew it (probably more of a permanent change), I'mmmm BACK. Well, not really. Gave up my social life for lent...or tax busy season gave it up for me, so these posts will more than likely be few and far between until post-April 15th.

Regardless, I've been meaning to share my obsession with ombre (on anything) and chambray shirts. Remember, in middle school, when tie-dye was cool/acceptable? Maybe it was just me, but I'm pretty sure I still own a rainbow tie-dyed skirt from 8th grade that literally EVERYONE wanted. Don't worry--I've only saved it for theme-party purposes. Anyway, ombre is like the tie-dye's classier, more sophisticated older sister. Paired with a strong solid (black is typically my color of choice), it's eye-catching and edgy even in a neutral. It looks great in a pant, a shirt, swimwear, dresses, skirts AND accessories--assuming it's done tastefully. But, unlike a lot of trends, I haven't seen it executed in an unforgivable manner...yet. Shit, even Target figured it out!

Obviously I love this look because of the shirt. After all, it incorporates the my two favorite things right now. But on top of everything, it's incredibly comfortable. Leggings, an over sized infinity scarf and some comfy booties and you're set. For lunch, shopping, class, casual Friday--whatever you're up to. I think I wore this exact outfit on at least four different flights over the past two months....hopefully the flight attendants weren't keeping tabs...

OBSESSION OF THE WEEK: Collar Necklaces

ogcuff
I talked about color in work wardrobes last week and mentioned jewelry as a great way to incorporate that something special into your outfit. More specifically, collar necklaces are a great way to complete both casual and work ensembles--especially for summer!

SpearmintWhen I first fell in love with a collar necklace (via pinterest, of course), it was this gold HRH Collection necklace, I didn't think I'd ever be able to pull it off. In a moment of weakness, I ordered it as a fashion experiment. Luckily for me, I was able to justify my purchase, as it is totally stunning. The double chain is eye-catching and dresses any outfit up. I've worn it to work with a nice blouse and to go out at night, and versatility is always a plus! Each chain has a unique finish, which makes the piece even more unique. Between this and my Rebecca Minkoff bags, I'm able to look like I might know what I'm doing when I get dressed. I surprise myself (and the rest of the world) daily.

Tangerine Teardrop BibAnother great website for collar (also called "cuff" or "bib" necklaces) is called BaubleBar. When you sign up for the website (you don't have to if you just want to look), they give you a $10 credit toward your first purchase and have a rewards program for future purchases. Everything is reasonably priced, and they are always featuring the newest designs. They have a great selection, and these two (the spearmint and coral ones) are some of my favorites!I have yet to buy either of them, but by the time I'm finished with this post, I'll probably have persuaded myself to take the plunge...

For all of you big spenders out there, I've found another option for you. I only wish I could own this CC Skye neon chain necklace, but it's a little pricey for the budget I attempt to keep. Stars like Demi Lovato have been spotted wearing this little wonder, and there's no question of why. It's bright, trendy and stands out incredibly against black (my favorite color, if you weren't aware).

Happy shopping, bitches.

THE WORKING BITCH & Bright Colors

Trouvé Contrast Trim Silk Shirt
In yet another effort to avoid dressing like the dull, drab color scheme often associated with offices (i.e. black, white and a multitude of grays), I have drastically broadened my color horizons for work apparel. Typically, I am a serious proponent of black--it's slimming, matches with everything, helps highlight accessories and looks good whether you have a sun-kissed tan or wore SPF 100 your entire Cabo trip. While there are lots of cute neutral options for regular and night life, this isn't exactly the case for work life (at least for those of us subject to business professional and casual). Yes, everyone needs neutral, classic pieces for a work wardrobe.  You should definitely have a black or gray (or both) suit, but let's try not to look like every other office clone out there in a plain suit. For day to day wear, I recommend incorporating pops of color. This doesn't mean dress like a rainbow....and you obviously have to read your work environment. If you work at an extremely professional and conservative corporate law firm, you may have to use subtle hints of color (so maybe the orange pants are a no).
Hutton trouser in raw silk
If you can do it, a colored pant (like these by Vince Camuto) can be so cute and eye catching. There are lots of great colors in tops, of course. This silk button down by Trouve comes in coral too! Maybe you're just trying to catch the attention of the cute guy four cubicles down as you take the scenic route to the restroom four times a day, but being noticed is important beyond this purpose. Appropriate pieces in rich colors (not necessarily bright) can set you apart from the sea of black, white, gray and basic blue that surrounds you. It never hurts to have a conversation (compliment) piece. Sometimes all you need is the right introduction, and poof! You've made the right connection. Another plus? It's easier to transition your outfit for happy hour at the bar....

Vince Camuto Skinny Ankle Pants
One more way to incorporate this trend is with jewelry. There are so many eye-catching, unique ways to wear jewelry in the workplace. Plus, it's perfect for a more color-subtle style. Jewelry is appropriate for every season and you can find great deals and prices for different types of fashion pieces (H&M often has great options!). I'll also be zeroing in on my favorite type of statement jewelry of the moment in my next post....

A HEALTHY BITCH LOVES....Pilates

Funny Spring Lift Ecard: I tell people I do Pilates because no one knows what it is or if it actually exists. Two years ago, I would have laughed in your face if you told me I'd be hooked on Pilates right now. At $25 per 55-minute class, you'd have to be kidding me. Well, I'm here to eat some fucking crow today because this shit is absolutely bananas (in the words of Rachel Zoe and, more importantly, my dear friend Devin).

Beside the fact that I started Pilates about a year and a half ago and I'm still walking like a penguin after my class yesterday because I'm so sore, I'm convinced that it's changed my body for the better. My posture has always sucked, but it sucks WAY less now, and I have natural definition in my legs and arms. The whole idea is to strengthen your core, which supports most of the movement and other muscle activity throughout your body. As a result, I now know where my abs are and how to flex my ass muscles--quite an accomplishment I'd say.  While I still struggle to get through most of the classes, I walk out of there feeling like a million bucks (mentally-- physically I usually want to cry).

So, there's only one primary problem with this whole program: it's expensive. As a recent college graduate, I haven't exactly had the funds to buy a monthly membership or even individual classes. In preparing for Cabo this spring, I found myself asking, "do I make my car payment this month, or do I try to look like a fucking Playboy bunny by spring break?" Between this and my shopping addiction, my financial health was in serious jeopardy.

I've found two ways to alleviate this problem. First, Groupon-like websites. These usually offer packages of ten classes for $100, which is less than half the price per class that you would usually pay. Studios also typically offer first-time students a discounted rate for your initial group class (ranging from free to $10 or $15).  I find that Lifebooker tends to have Pilates packages pretty often. My favorite LA-area studios are Pilates Plus Beverly Hills (Eden Sassoon) and Sweat Pilates in Culver City. I found both using discount sites like Lifebooker and Living Social, but they also have their own promotional and seasonal packages. For example, PP90210 had tax day specials that included a discounted package of individual classes. Sweat Pilates has seasonal promotions as well as "community classes" every week. These classes are $18 instead of the the regular $25, which is really nice when you need a fix!

Long story short, I don't think I'll be testing for Playboy anytime soon (not that I'd really want to, but it would be nice to have the option), but I do feel healthier, more relaxed and more fit because of Pilates. In my mind, it makes up for all of the wine and vodka sodas during the week. Ugh I hate admitting things like this. I sound like an infomercial. Oops, oh well.
